Why every golfer should visit George

4/25/2022 10:02:33 AM

We really have it all; mountains, forests, sea, restaurants, climate, etc. Add some of the country’s (and arguably even the world’s) top golf courses to this enviable list, and you get the ultimate overall package. Have a look at these fantastic golf courses at the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains to see why George should be your number 1 golfing location, if it isn’t already.

•At the top of our list is The Links Situated at the world renowned Fancourt Golf Estate. Once an airfield, this dune-scaped course was designed by Gary Player and welcomed its first players in November 2000. Known for the hard-hitting golfing challenge it presents and a credible rendition of classic Scottish links courses, it played host to several of the world’s most significant tournaments in the past. A round of golf on this course means you’ll follow in the footsteps of golfing greats, such as Ernie Els, Tiger Woods and Retief Goosen.

Fancourt is not only known for The Links, but boasts two other lovely courses which consistently rank among the Top 20 in national golf course listings. Fancourt Montagu has 18 holes and is the estate’s original golf course. Its terrain varies and meanders through an indigenous parkland landscape. It is suitable for golfers of all abilities. There’s a warm-up area, and a chipping and bunker practice area.

•Like its other siblings, the Fancourt Outeniqua golf course was designed by Gary Player and promises an entertaining and leisurely golfing experience. Tough still challenging, it’s a more lenient range and can accommodate a large number of golf players. It’s well-manicured and tough holes are alternated by easier ones.

George Golf Club, affectionately known as the Old Course, dates way back to 1906 when it was first established. However, balls only got hit on the current site since the 1930’s. It’s an enchanting, natural parkland course lined with many trees, and golfers often share their play ground with African monkeys and buck, not to mention the wealth of indigenous feathered friends. It presents players with a fair share of challenges, and its famous Hole 17 counts among the Top 500 in the world. As a bonus, the club also offers some of the most affordable rates in South Africa, and the thousands of visitors swinging their clubs here every year is testimony to its immense popularity.

Kingswood Golf Estate attracts golfers from all over with its uniquely designed championship golf course. From practically any place on the course, players can appreciate the ever-changing mountainscape while strutting their stuff. Each hole offers its own challenges, with especially the last four holes giving players a run for their money. With its fast greens, traditional pot-bunkers, expert golf coaching on hand and available to all, and known as a woman-friendly track, this golf course is one of the must-play courses in the area.

-Another golfing gem is to be found at the Oubaai Golf Estate near Herolds Bay. The estate boasts the first Ernie Els Signature Course in South Africa and players of all levels will have fun testing their skills. It is well laid out and built on a cliff-top with the mighty Indian Ocean as a splendid backdrop. Having said that, windy conditions on said cliff-top will take up the golfing challenge a notch or two.

•For a nice, quick round of golf, the Glenwood Short Golf Course with its nine holes and high-quality bent grass greens is a definite consideration. Their vision is to make their customers happy and that is indeed the case. After having clubbed and sliced, puttered and struck, and everything else that golfers do, you can relax in their fully licenced clubhouse before moving on to your next Garden Route adventure.

•And if you and your golfing buddies would like to go on a golf tour, experiencing all there is to experience golf-wise in our area without doing all the organisation yourself, Golfguy Tours is your solution. It’s an inbound golf tour operator with an expert team of professional golfers and golf event specialists.
